ABOUT THE GREAT MIGRATORY DANCE

Fly above the highest peaks,
Glide across vast oceans and deserts,
Drawn by the stream of warm air,
Navigating through clouds and rains and winds
are the Migratory Birds, dispersing and reassembling,
in their annual epic fly-past.
When they arrive at the fragrant and moist tropics,
The Sun Soarers, the Water Gliders, and the Sand Rovers,
All bask in a grand dance of the moment.
Till whisper of Spring drifts around shortly --
Time to fly home again.

Every Sept to March, migratory birds from the northern hemisphere arrived at Singapore for their annual tropical stopover. The avian journey is nothing short of heroic.
The flocks must fly over thousands of kilometres above the highest peaks, across vast land and deserts before reaching to their tropical home away from home.
Along the routes these migratory birds must also look out for dangerous power lines and wind turbines as well as dodge hunters and wildlife traps. They are now also vulnerable to the effects of climate change that destroyed some of the habitats along their stopovers.
The Great Migratory Dance is a riveting performance using movement patterns to capture the spirit of the spectacular seasonal flight through the eyes of the children.
The infinite distance and numerous hardships endured by the migratory birds can inspire awe and wonder in the young minds, not to mention as lessons of endurance and tenacity.
The performance highlights the birds’ instinctive sense of direction. Dancers perform in various movement patterns through rapid change of directions to show the migratory birds as super navigators.

ABOUT THE YOUNG FISSION BENEFIT
Featuring children-performers from the Young Fission Benefit with the motto of Dance with a Mission, the young dancers prepared for their performance by watching avian documentaries and studied flight patterns of the migratory birds. Along the process they also learn about protecting the wetland habitats which provide sustenance and abode for the migratory birds.

Under the auspices of the arts granary, the annual Young People Environmental Dance-theatre (YPED) series has been presenting captivating performances on critical ecological concerns to young audience for more than 20 years.
