PROGRAMME NOTE
Flower Moon over Singapore River 《花月夜》
– a Celebration for the Commoners
9 & 10 Sept 2022 | 7:30pm & 8:30pm | Cavenagh Bridge

A Mid-Autumn Festival Celebration for the Commoners
Flower Moon over Singapore River 《花月夜》, presented at the historic CAVENAGH BRIDGE, is the annual Moonstruck Series by ARTS FISSION. The 2022 performance is offered free and hope to bring simple joy to the public especially as a celebration of respite to ease social isolation under the COVID-19 pandemic.
Percussion Music
The idea to stage a performance at a bridge site is inspired by Asian classic paintings and prints that often featured bridges as the dramatic backdrop. For example, the famous long Chinese scroll – Upstream at the River during Qing Ming Festival 清明上河图 that depicted common folks engaged in their livelihoods and leisurely activities, or old Japanese ukiyo-e prints showing lives of common people in the floating world.
The music for the performance is also inspired by another familiar Chinese music piece titled Spring. River. Flower. Moon. Night. 春江花月夜.
Using contemporary compositional treatment, Composer Zechariah Goh Toh Chai deconstructs the familiar Chinese melody and presents his new version with flute, sheng, suona, marimba and drums. Performed by Chinese wind percussion ensemble Reverberance, the musicians play with rhythmic motifs and sound textures in an improvisatory and spontaneous manner.
Contemporary Dance
As in past Moonstruck Series tradition, all dance works are created by the ARTS FISSION Dancers, Aisha, Andine, Cymone and Marveen. The performance is curated by artistic director Angela Liong.
To reflect the cultural colors of the Mid-Autumn Festival, two enchanting myth-inspired dances are created:
-
DRAGON MORPHING by Aisha and Andine references the story of the carp that leaped over the mountain top and transformed into a majestic dragon.
-
GOBBLING THE MOON by Marveen and Cymone depicts two frogs vying to swallow something more than the animals could handle.
A Shimmering Roving Performance
Flower Moon over Singapore River 《花月夜》 is designed as a roving performance under 30-minutes. Audiences can stand along both sides of the 79-meter long bridge but won’t miss a thing as the performance segments move back and forth and gradually unfolds from one end of the bridge onto the other end.
